In the fast-paced realm of competitive swimming, choosing the right goggles is not just a preference; it’s a performance-enhancing necessity. As the swimming landscape evolves, so does the technology behind these essential accessories. In this comprehensive guide, we unveil the top-tier swimming goggles of 2024 that will elevate your swimming experience.
After several years of buying goggles for my competitive swimmer and after polling several swimmers of many different age groups and disciplines, I have created this updated guide based on my popular post from 2023: 10 Best Swimming Goggles for 2023 | Tested by Swimmers.
Don’t be fooled by content writers. Many of the guides out there are selling you a product without knowing anything about competitive swimming and it’s obvious to those of us who know swimming. Our reviews are based on real-life experience from myself, my son, coaches, and other swimmers. Here you will get an honest review of products we actually have used. If we haven’t personally tested it, we will make that clear in the review.

Best Swim Goggles For Kids
Younger swimmers have different needs than older swimmers and need good kids swim goggles. Ease of use, durability, and comfort are at the top of my list when evaluating what pair of goggles I recommend. Last year I recommended the AquaSphere Kayenne and AquaSphere Keyenne Jr., and I still say this is the best goggle to start with for a new swimmer.
Often new swimmers prefer a clear lens when swimming indoors to be able to see better while learning their strokes and gaining awareness around the pool. If they are swimming outside, tinted, UV lenses are a must. As they get older and more comfortable in the water, the trend is to wear goggles with a mirrored finish. These goggles are large enough, have a wide, durable strap, and sit outside of the eye socket just a little.
These are typically tri-Athlon style goggles but have a wide strap and a large comfortable seal that is more forgiving. You can buy these in clear or tinted and are typically at a moderate price. The downfall is that the nose piece is not adjustable in width.

Best Training Goggles
It’s important to be consistent when swimming. Early on, hundredths of a second don’t matter as much. As you progress as a swimmer, every advantage makes a huge difference. Many high-level coaches will argue about the benefits of training how you race.
My opinion, and my son’s opinion, is that you should train using the same equipment that you will be using to race. Now obviously there are drills that require training gear and there are advantages to making it harder to swim while building your strength or stamina.
If you only wear your special goggles or your special suit on race days, you will be unfamiliar with how they perform in the water. Why throw in another variable on race day? This is a concept that we use during training and one that is a bit controversial among coaches.

How To Pick The Best Goggles
Heading to the pool for your first competitive swim? The right pair of goggles is essential. With so many options available, it might feel overwhelming. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered with this simple guide to picking the best goggles for a new competitive swimmer.
1. Understanding Goggle Types
Start by understanding the different types of goggles. Racing goggles are sleek and low-profile, ideal for reducing drag. Training goggles offer durability and comfort for long hours in the water. Figure out your needs based on your swimming goals. We believe you should train in the goggles you will race in, but not everyone agrees. Some of choosing a goggle is trial and error.
2. Finding the Right Fit
A proper fit is crucial. Goggles that are too tight can be uncomfortable, while loose ones may leak. Look for adjustable straps and nose bridges to customize the fit. Trying them on before you buy is a smart move. If you want to spend the money, custom-fit goggles may be for you.
3. Lens Tint for Indoor vs. Outdoor Pools
Consider the tint of the lenses based on where you’ll be swimming. Clear or light-tinted lenses are suitable for indoor pools, while darker tints or mirrored lenses are great for outdoor swimming, reducing glare and brightness. Many professional swimmers choose mirrored goggles for indoor competitions as the enhanced visibility and color highlight underwater aspects of the pool. Be sure to try different lenses before investing a lot of money. Maybe try a friend’s goggles!?
4. Anti-Fog and UV Protection
Opt for goggles with anti-fog coatings to ensure clear vision during your swim. UV protection is also essential, especially if you’ll be spending long hours outdoors. Protecting your eyes is a must! Our experience though, is that anti-fog technology has a long way to go and rarely works. There are no pair of goggles that will not fog!
5. Practice, Practice, Practice
Once you’ve picked your goggles, practice putting them on and taking them off. Getting comfortable with adjusting them will make your pre-swim routine smoother, helping you focus on your performance.
6. Test in the Water
Before the big race, test your goggles in the water. Make sure they seal properly and don’t leak. This practice swim ensures you’re familiar with how they feel and perform, giving you confidence on race day.
7. Maintaining Your Goggles
Take good care of your goggles by rinsing them with fresh water after each use. Avoid touching or wiping the inside of the lenses, as this can remove anti-fog coatings. Keep them in a protective case when not in use.
Choosing the right goggles is a crucial step for any competitive swimmer. With these tips, you’re well on your way to finding the perfect pair that enhances your performance and adds to your overall swimming experience.
